Is a frame label plate required?
Yes. It is required for any motorcycle that is licensed/registered in almost every state in Europe, the USA, and Australia.
Is it legal to temporarily remove it from the frame?
Yes, you can remove and replace it. For example, if you have to repair or repaint the frame.
Is it illegal to buy and engrave a label?
No. It is, however, illegal to engrave a plate with incorrect or false information. If you are unsure about your circumstances, consult an expert.
What should be listed on the label?
The Serial Number of the motorcycle (called V.I.N. in the USA). The brand name of the manufacturer and the model of the bike are required. In some countries or states in the USA the engine serial number is required. The year of manufacture and the maximum gross weight (the weight of the bike plus the maximum allowable weight of passengers and other items) are also required. If you are unsure which items are required in your country or state, ask your mechanic (even a car mechanic), he will know. The information on the plate must be clear and legible.
